About C. Evan Stewart

Mr. Stewart retired from practicing law after a 47+ year career in 2025, having been most recently a senior partner in an international law firm headquartered in New York City.  In addition to private practice, Stewart was also Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Nikko Securities International, as well as the head of litigation at E. F. Hutton & Co. He is the author of Myron Taylor: The Man Nobody Knew (Twelve Tables Press 2023), The Worst Supreme Court Decisions, Ever! (And Related Tales) (Twelve Tables Press 2024), Law In American History (And In Mine) (Twelve Tables Press 2025), and William Henry Seward’s Quest to Save the Nation During the Secession Winter (November 1860 – April 1861) (Twelve Tables Press 2026).

Over the course of his legal career, Stewart litigated cases throughout the United States and abroad, handling trials, appeals, and matters before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, the Delaware Chancery Court, and the U. S. Supreme Court. While he most often represented Fortune 100 corporate clients, Stewart found particular satisfaction in representing individuals against powerful adversaries – defeating in the courtroom: public companies  who tried to deny corporate executives millions of dollars of stock options; the Superintendent of Sing Sing Prison who denied a prisoner basic civil rights; a New York City landlord who allowed the destruction of a helpless family’s apartment; the Securities and Exchange Commission which accused a convicted felon of securities fraud; and, the New York Attorney General who criminally prosecuted a low level employee for allegedly “late trading” mutual funds (that trial was featured in the New York Law Journal as “one of the top trials of 2005”). Stewart also served as a Special Assistant District Attorney, New York County (1979 – 80).  Representative litigated matters include: Fishoff v. Coty, Inc., 676 F. Supp. 2d 209 (S.D.N.Y. 2009); aff’d, 634 F. 3d 647 (2d Cir. 2011); Goodman v. Goldman Sachs & Co., 2010 W 5186180 (D.N.J. December 14, 2010); International Strategies Group v. ABN Amro Bank, 853 N.Y.S. 2d 878 (1st Dept. 2008); Yeshiva University v. New England Educational Institute, 631 F. Supp. 146 (S.D.N.Y. 1986); In re: Penn Central Transportation Co., 42 B.R. 657 (E.D. Pa. 1984) & 771 F.2d 762 (3d Cir. 1985); McGuiness v. Jakubiak, 431 N.Y.S. 2d 755 (Sup. Ct. 1980).
